(My) Space suggests an alternative time-space dimension using time lapse video and public locations as the performative space. The artists create their own free public space filled with a fragile dignity that results in an alternative communication zone. The process of artist Fiona Gavino weaving herself into her own work in public places creates a tangible interstice that restructures the conventional and devises free areas of expression.
The idea for this work was originally conceived whilst Gavino was doing a three month residency with 98B COLLABoratory in Manila (Philippines) and feeling in-between-spaces. The film was then shot in the pixels+fibre project’s hometown of Fremantle (Australia). Specific sites were chosen for their ability to evoke a sense of spatial interstice whilst Gavino’s filmed performance also creates a chink in the everyday experience of those who just happen to be passing by.
The film also contextualises aspects of cultural, social and environmental ideas through the use of cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural art practices that marry the digital with the traditional.
